Getting your first ten online customers is a different job from scaling to a thousand. You are not building a machine yet — you are proving that people will pay for what you offer when they find it online. This is a low-budget playbook you can run in a few weeks in Douala or Yaoundé.
Step 1 — Pick one offer and say it in one sentence
Not your whole catalogue. One specific thing, for one specific person, with a clear result. "Same-day laptop screen replacement in Akwa" beats "we do all computer repairs". A sharp offer is easier to advertise, easier to price, and easier for a customer to say yes to. You can widen later.
Step 2 — Build one place to send people
Every ad, post and WhatsApp status should point to the same destination — a one-page site or a solid landing page with: the offer, three or four photos, the price or price range, the area you serve, and one big "Chat on WhatsApp" button. This page is what makes an ad convert instead of just getting likes. It also lets you run Step 3 properly.
Step 3 — Run a small, local ad test
On Facebook and Instagram, create one campaign with a modest daily budget, tightly targeted: your city, a 10–15 km radius, the age range and interests that match your buyer. Run two or three versions of the creative for a week. You are looking for the cost per WhatsApp conversation, not for viral reach. Keep whatever is cheapest per real enquiry and stop the rest.
If budget is tight, "click to WhatsApp" ads work without a website — but the landing page almost always lowers your cost per lead, so add it as soon as you can.
Step 4 — Set up WhatsApp Business so leads do not leak
- Greeting message that restates the offer and asks the two questions you always need (location, what exactly they want).
- Quick replies for your five most common answers, so you respond in seconds.
- Labels: New, Quoted, Paid, Follow-up. This is your free CRM for the first hundred customers.
- A catalogue in the app with photos and prices, so you send a link instead of retyping.
Speed matters: enquiries answered within a few minutes convert far better than ones answered hours later.
Step 5 — Turn those ten into twenty
After each job: ask for a Google review, ask permission to post the result, and message the customer once more a week later. Referrals and repeat business from your first ten are cheaper than any ad. Screenshot every positive message (with permission) and use it as social proof in your next round.
What to ignore for now
A blog, a logo redesign, TikTok virality, a mobile app, an elaborate website. None of that gets you customer number three. Offer, landing point, small ad test, fast WhatsApp follow-up. Once that reliably produces enquiries, then invest in scale.
